Can people live in peace together when deeply held beliefs and views are in conflict?
No because there would be a war or a battle being abrupt when boundaries are being pushed.
Hard to come into an agreement, might break some agreements between the countries.
People can co-exist because future generations will be more understanding to different beliefs.
Maybe if willing to be able to negotiate, even if it is difficult to achieve that. Opponent is our equal.
Should the international community play a role in helping countries establish self-determination?
If a country is having a hard time being self-determined, then the internal community should help by giving suggestions.
Important for governments to accept that religion is a big part of peoples lives and is apart of the government system.
There should be a rule to a certain point.
Is it ever OK for victims to become the persecutors?
According to the law, it is never okay. It also depends on how the victims are being persecutors and what boundaries are being pushed.
For morals, it is not okay because the victims are stooping down to the level and becoming oppressors themselves.
In the perspective during a war, people need to fight back.
No because it creates new victims.
Is violence justified when access to resources is cut off?
It depends why the resources are cut off.
Cannot make the decision out of greed; not a good reason to kill someone.
Violence should be the last option because the losses might be very high
Does the Holocaust excuse Israel from overreaching partition boundaries with Palestine?
Possibly depending if people are going to abuse their power or become selfish. However if there is peace between the people sharing the country than it is alright.
The Israel Palestine Introduction video is a pro-Arab, biased Palestine video. It is biased because it shows that Arabs are being portrayed as victims. Since the West/United States had taken land from the surrounding Arab countries and took their land away to give to the Palestinians. In this video, he Arabs had blamed the United States for taking their land and that when Arab countries did try to invade Palestine, the United States tries to protect the Palestinians by giving them the essentials to protect them. Arabs were seen as victims because people are taking their land away from them causing people to move out of the country and that Arabs were afraid that if land was being taken, more land would be taken also in the future.
Why is Israel the black pawn and everyone else is white?
Why is Palestine so small compared to every one else?
Why aren't there other black pieces?
What clues do you see do you see?
All Arab countries surrounding Israel and Palestine.
Palestinians are being put at gun point by Israel
Israel is a black pawn and everyone else is white
Palestine is stuck
"Go ahead! He took your Square--Take it back!"
Different face expressions
White pieces move first, first attack were made by Arabic regions. Black piece moves after, Israel is crowded by Arabs and does not want to make the first move.
Israel is blocked off and the only one armed
What is the message of the cartoon
The message of the cartoon is that Palestine is the Arab's pawn to try to beat Israel when Israel is armed to the teeth. Palestine is a pawn between Israel and other Arab countries; between land.
The message is that Israel are victimized by Palestine and is being attacked and when Israel finally attacks back, Israel is seen as the enemy. They retaliate because Israel is sick of being bullied (provoked) and Israel is attacked because Israel is bigger and different. Arab countries are overreacting. There are consequences to your actions. Israel can only take so much and will defend what is rightfully theirs.
What is the bias?
Israel is the big boy who finally defended himself against the little boy. Makes Israel look like the enemy for defending itself against Palestine.
Palestine is the little boy who is bullying the big boy. Keeps pushing limits of Israel until Israel fights back. All the kids look a like except for Israel to show how unified the Arab countries are. For Israel against Palestine (Pro-Israel).
In the late 1880's a group of Zionists traveled to Palestine to see what it offered as a Jewish homeland. One Zionist said, when he returned to Europe; "The Bride is beautiful but she is married to another man"
What was meant by this quote: Palestine is a beautiful land but is owned by another country. People who lived there was non-Jewish but Arab.
Reflection: Part 1 Guide questions: 1. What information did you find most interesting about the conflict from this portion of the reader?
What I found interesting about the conflict from this portion of the reader is how the countries had fought over the land and what
boundaries were being pushed. The claim of the Jews was that it was their homeland and the Muslims argument was that they have been there for
centuries and they did not want to share their land. 2. Explain and give examples of how other nations and international organizations impacted the conflict.
Other nations and international organizations impacted the conflict is that some countries tried to get rid of the Jews by using the Palestinians to start the fight. However the Israeli fights back. Even though the Israeli and the Palestinians have compromise before, it became broken when the Palestinians starts to provoke the Israeli.
Reflection on Guide questions 2: 1. How did the UN try to keep peace in the region?
The UN tried to keep peace in the region by dividing the land for the Jews and the Arabs. 2. How did war impact the region?
The war impacted the region by giving Jews more land and making Jews and other Arab countries discriminate against the Palestinian refugees who still remained in Palestine. 3. Reflect on the treatment of Palestinian refugees
The treatment of the Palestinians refugees is upsetting because they have to go through as being outsiders (Traitors) and I can understand their resentment towards the Jews because the Jews took away their land and had treated them horribly. Jews also discriminated against the refugees even though it was once their land and tries to make their land a Jewish community only. Jordan was the only place that gave the refugees rights compared to other Arab nations.

Directions: Look at the map that spans 1917 to the present, make five observations about the changes you see and why they happened
1. Before 1917, Palestine had full control over the land and there was no Jews.
2. 1946, there were some immigration from the Jews due to Jewish settlers who paid for the land they occupied.
3. In one year, 1947, Jews had already owned half of Palestine because of the UN General Assembly partition to separate the country into two nations.
4. Israel began taking more land after the war and had won the war against the Arab countries resulting in control over 77% of the territory.
5. In the present, Jews (Israeli) mainly occupied most of Palestine and thus there were only a little bit of the land occupied to the Palestinians refugees because they had no where else to live.
Reflection on Guide questions 3: 1. What role did the international community play in the 1967 War?
The international community adopted the Resolution 242 after the war. The Soviet Union had misinformed the Syrian government that Israeli forces were coming in however there were no movement. 2. How can "language" be used to one's advantage? (UN resolution 242) Each language would misinterpret the words differently and it could be used to one's advantage depending on what it says in the resolution and what is being gained.
3. Evaluate the treatment of Palestinian refugees by Israelis after the war? what are some possible reasons for this treatment? Palestinian refugees were treated horribly by the Israelis after the war and were denied any basic rights. Possible reasons of the treatment is that the Israeli only wants their community to be Jews only and that the Jews did not like the Palestine because they joined with the surrounding Arab countries to hate and discriminate against the Israeli.

Reflection Questions for Guide Questions 4:
Evaluate Israel's response to the 1st Intifada. How could it have been handled differently?
Israel could try to speak cal my or negotiate a level in between that both sides could be satisfied to.
Evaluate the US role in the peace attempts in the region. What were the causes of successes and failures?
There weren't really good attempts for peace in the region. Although people are saying they should change things, nothing is being done.
Assess the role of Israel and the PLO in attempts at peace.
Israel and the PLO are becoming more open however they still want control and power over the situation
Reflectionquestions on Guide Questions 5: 1. Discuss the viewpoint of the Israelis and the Palestinians on the barrier between Israel and the West Bank. The Palestinians referred to the barrier as the “apartheid wall.” Israel realized that it would remain a Jewish state and that claim most of the West Bank. Israeli feared the terrorist activities; (security) build this wall to save life. Palestine disagreed with the wall because it cuts off all communication and took most of the West Bank. Most of the land that was given to them is surrounded by gates. Another limit on their rights. 2. What do you see as the major stumbling blocks in the attempted peace talks discussed in this section? The major stumbling blocks in the attempted peace talks is the agreements between land and the acknowledgment of Palestine as their own country and community. The road map was ineffective because of the one-year gap and the new Palestine Authority have too extreme demands. It also did not satisfy the Arab and Israel demands. Reflection Questions on Guide Questions 6: 1. Do you think Palestine should be a full member of the UN? Why or why not?Palestine should be a full member because Palestinians had endured so much just to be acknowledge as their own. Also Palestine plays an important role since the other countries and the United States continue to keep being involved with Palestine, therefore Palestine should be a member. Palestine would have more freedom in their own personal rights and decisions. The United States is on the Israel's side and it needs both the US and Israel to be able to identify Palestine as their own state. 2. Evaluate how a lasting peace could be achieved in this conflict. Give specific evidence from your workA lasting piece could be achieved in this conflict because there would be no more wars or death rates increasing. Israel would be able to share land that they have captured since everybody the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, however, it will still be under their control, but visitors could enter. People could live in peace among each other and learn how to compromise. Have Israel and Palestine see each other as people.
